The new year is a great time to go through the 4 Pillars of Wellness. These pillars include mental wellness, emotional wellness, physical wellness, and energetic wellness.
Even though these pillars are stand-alone, they are also very interconnected. This is because we are holistic beings. For example, when something is out of whack emotionally, we will often feel it physically.
The first pillar we are going to focus on is mental wellness.
Mental wellness is defined as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
This basically means staying positive, and keeping the mind & memory both active & strong. The mind is like a window into your body and soul, and it is important that it receives proper nourishment to keep it well. Your mental state not only controls your awareness but also determines how your body functions. Too much stress can have a negative effect on your mental wellness.
Daily habits for mental wellness
There are some basic day-to-day habits you can do to support your mental wellness and have a healthier you. These habits only take a few minutes each day but make a huge difference in your mental health.
- Maintain a good sleep schedule to stay well-rested.
- Interact with others for at least 10 minutes each day.
- Engage in a mental workout like mahjong or crossword puzzles.
- Smile and laugh whenever you can!

Did you know that working out also contributes hugely to mental wellness?! That’s right – when we exercise, our brain releases feel-good hormones (serotonin, oxytocin, & dopamine) that help relieve stress and put us in a better mental state.
The following 10-minute workout will help do all of those things — relieve stress, stimulate the release of your feel-good hormones, enhance your positive energy, and stimulate the brain.
