Explore & Experience: Indonesian Culture through Traditional Dance
Explore & Experience brings you the tastes, sights, traditions, and intricacies of cultures around the world – and can be experienced from the comfort of your own home as an online workshop.
The first virtual Explore & Experience Workshop will host Miss Widya Sartika (Tika), an Indonesian dancer and cultural expert, and will explore Indonesian culture through the lens of one of it’s most long-standing art forms, traditional Indonesian dance.
In Indonesia, traditional dancing is better described as theater, as each and every dance tells an intricate story and is uniquely tied to Indonesian culture. In this workshop, we will discover Indonesia’s natural wonders before exploring various Indonesian dances with our host and learning the stories behind them. We will then become novice Indonesian dancers ourselves with some basic dance move instruction, before watching a live dance performance from our host.
Agenda for the 90-minute workshop:
- Discover Indonesia’s magic
- Exploring traditional Indonesian dance
- Movement practice – Miss Sartika will teach the participants some key Indonesian dance movements (both male and female)
- Live dance performance – Miss Sartika will perform a live Indonesian dance
- Q&A – Live Q&A with Miss Sartika

Widya Sartika (Tika)
Widya Sartika, or Tika for short, is an Indonesian dance and cultural expert. She was born in a family which had a lot of passion about Indonesian culture and she started learning about it from a very young age. Her mother and sisters were dancers and she started dancing when she was 13 years old and is still dancing until today. She loves Indonesian dance not only because it makes her happy, but also because it allows her to share her culture by entertaining people. Her passion for Indonesian culture and dance has led her to Australia, where she currently teaches Indonesian dance and language classes.
