Healthy Holidays: Prioritize

Share this Post:

The holiday season is upon us and it only comes once a year! It should be a joyous time, but what often happens is we get stressed out with all the extra activities, extra food and drink, extra pounds migrating to our waist and hips, and lack of sleep. As a result, we end up feeling terrible mentally, physically, and emotionally.

But never fear! Over the coming weeks, we will be giving you some easy-to-implement tips to help you breeze through the holiday season stress-free, guilt-free, and extra weight-free 😉

TIP #1 – PRIORITIZE

There are so many extra activities eachholiday season that we are bombarded with – school programs, shopping, parties, out-of-town guests. It’s important to sit down with your family to look ar rhe calendar and the activities ahead of you.

Realistically, you annot do everything! Pick out the events and activities that are non-optional first, then fill in accordingly after that. Remember that the season is for enjoying family and friends, and that might simply mean foregoing an event to spend a quiet evening at home with popcorn while playing a board game, or sipping a nice cup of hot chocolate while sharing past memories.

Your calendar isn’t the only thing to prioritize this month – consider how you prioritize healthy eating while still enjoying all the goodies of the season. This Healthy Glazed Nut & Seed Medley will help you do just that!

While you can use any nuts and seeds that you like, each have their own health benefits:

  • Walnuts are a great brain food that are high in omega 3’s
  • Almonds are considered “king of the nuts” because of their high mineral content
  • The lesser-know Brazil nuts are a complete protein
  • Flax seeds are high in omega 3’s and dietary fiber
  • Chia seeds are high in fiber, high in protein, and rich in minerals

Try our recipe below with whatever combination of nuts and seeds you like, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Glazed Nuts

These can be made quickly and stored in an airtight container for a few weeks, though they likely won’t last that long!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 2 cups nuts and seeds of your choice
  • dash of salt
  • pinch of cinnamon (optional for added holiday spice)

Directions:

  1. Heat a large skillet to medium heat.
  2. Add the nuts & seeds and let toast slightly while stirring a little.
  3. Gradually add the coconut sugar, stirring all the while.
  4. Continue to stir until you see the sugar melt and turn to a syrupy consistency. This is the tricky part – don’t let it burn!
  5. Make sure the nuts & seeds are all evenly coated.
  6. Remove your candied nuts & seeds to a piece of foil and let cool.

How are you prioritizing this holiday season?
